Where can I keep my medicine? What are tolcapone tablets? (Back to top) TOLCAPONE (Tasmar®) is used in combination with levodopa-carbidopa (Sinemet® or others) to treat Parkinson's disease. Generic tolcapone tablets are not yet available. What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top) They need to know if you have any of these conditions: •anorexia •dizzy or fainting spells •kidney or liver disease •low blood pressure •an unusual or allergic reaction to tolcapone, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives •pregnant or trying to get pregnant •breast-feeding How should I take this medicine? (Back to top) Take tolcapone tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking tolcapone except on your prescriber's advice. What if I miss a dose? (Back to top) If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. What drug(s) may interact with tolcapone? (Back to top) •apomorphine •dobutamine •furazolidone •isocarboxazid •isoproterenol •linezolid •methyldopa •phenelzine •procarbazine •tranylcypromine •warfarin Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines. What side effects may I notice from taking tolcapone? (Back to top) Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: •abdominal pain •anorexia or loss of appetite •confusion •fainting spells or lightheadedness •fever •hallucinations •involunatary muscle movements •severe diarrhea •urine that is dark yellow or brown in color •vomiting or nausea that does not go away •yellowing of the skin or eyes Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): •constipation •difficulty sleeping or excessive dreaming •dizziness •drowsiness •dry mouth •fatigue •headache •increased sweating •muscle cramping •nausea •upset stomach What should I watch for while taking tolcapone? (Back to top) Tolcapone may also increase the side effects caused by levodopa-carbidopa such as nausea or restless movements. If you notice an increase in or the appearance of certain side effects that occurred only while you were taking levodopa-carbidopa, contact your physician. The dose of levodopa-carbidopa may need to be lowered. Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. Your health care professional will need to frequently monitor blood tests to check the effects of tolcapone on the function of your liver. In rare cases tolcapone has caused liver injury. Your health care professional will monitor you closely and will want any unusual side effects reported to them as soon as possible. It may be several weeks before you feel the full effect of tolcapone. Continue to take your medicine on a regular schedule and do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice. You may get dizzy or have difficulty controlling your movements. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how tolcapone affects you. Do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. This reduces the risk of dizzy or fainting spells. Alcohol can increase possible dizziness; avoid alcoholic drinks. If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking tolcapone. Tolcapone may make your mouth dry. Chewing sugarless gum, sucking hard candy and drinking plenty of water may help. Visit your dentist regularly. Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top) Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F) in tight containers.
